Chapter Fourteen

Shae was getting grumpier and less tolerant of Jake’s answers to his what the fuck is going on questions, and Jake knew it was time to show Shae his true form. Which meant he had to take Shae up to the land the Beteferoce family had owned forever. There was a lovely cabin up there, built by the five of them a couple hundred years ago. Not as far north as their cave, but certainly isolated enough for the job.

Jake had packed Shae’s truck with supplies, made sure he was ready to go, and when Shae had woken, they’d made love, he’d fed his lover, and they’d made love again. He figured that should hold Shae’s hungers for the two hours it would take them to get out to the land.

“Hey, babe. Let’s take a road trip.” A road trip that might lead to everything blowing up in his face. What if Shae couldn’t manage to believe him, even with the proof in front of his eyes? Even worse, what if Shae decided he’d been duped, lied to, and he wanted to leave Jake for good? Jake didn’t think either of them could survive that. The emotional damage would be enormous, for Shae as well as himself. He knew how hard the separation was for a dragon; he feared it would induce madness in a human.

“A road trip? You don’t have a shift? It’s been, what? Two days? Three?”

More like six, but he wasn’t going to try to explain. Clearly Shae had forgotten he’d said he’d arranged for a couple weeks off. That was okay, Shae had been...preoccupied.

“I’ve got some time off and I want to show you the cabin I built with my brothers. It’s up the coast on a bluff overlooking the ocean.” It was a beautiful spot simply to visit, even if he didn’t have to share his biggest secret with Shae.

“Oh? Yeah. Hell yes. I’d love to.” Shae offered him a smile that lit the room up. “I haven’t had a road trip in ages.”

“Perfect. Let’s go!” He stood and headed for the door.

“Just...what about clothes and snacks, honey?”

God, confused Shae was adorable.

“Already in your truck. All I need is the keys and you.” He held out his hand.

“Wow. An adventure.” Shae took his hand and stepped close, lifting his face for a kiss.

Jake cupped his beloved’s face and pressed a gentle kiss on Shae. He didn’t want to start anything, so he kept it light and backed off, heading for the door before either of them got hard.

The morning was warm and the day promised to be beautiful—sunny and not near as warm on the coast. Shae stretched out in the passenger side of the truck and found some old-school rock on the radio.

As soon as they were out of the city, he tossed Shae a pepperoni stick and started to sing with the radio, his hand on Shae’s thigh. The trip moved quickly, the company wonderful, both of them talking about friends and work, about the way the light changed as they left the city.
